I fuckin hate people who say "get over yourself"

  • 95 posts

Usually when it is said to me, it'll be in a debate. I'll make a statement, someone else will disagree, I'll cite a source or something, and the response will be "get over yourself." Like I was never trying to be rude, only objective.

If I'm interpreting the phrase correctly, it means, "don't have any self-esteem at all. If you assert yourself one little smidgen, you're getting too big for your britches, and you need to get over yourself."  People who say it just need to stfu

I guess the reason I get so angry about it is because ppl never say it to those who are proud of possessing things that aren't of any perceived value to the majority or that no one cares about. Like say a women who might be considered overweight but doesn't care and thinks she's sexy and makes sure everyone knows it. This being an example because the woman possesses a cocky attitude in her appearance and rightfully so; her argument isn't that she's skinny it's that she's attractive. Yet she's not gonna hear that statement is she? No. It's basically a way for ppl to tell someone to shut up about something good they have. Which in itself isnt a bad thing I guess but my debate point in the op still stands

Cliffs: nobody's gonna utter that phrase to someone on equal or lower ground

So keep a cold and mute attitude at all times about everything you talk about, folks. Never know when someone's gonna call you out for having a haughty attitude.

i dont really care about what other people think of me or a subject, and so should you. as long as you manage to live on your own you're doing right whatever you've been doing and should keep doing it

debating with others and their opinions is something i lost interest in a long time ago

and u know the irony of it is someone who downplays their accomplishments and are proud of how they usually take the high road in most situations get the same general attitude from ppl.

I personally only say "get over yourself" when the person is acting out of proportion to rationality in a way that I find obnoxious (usually because of entitlement, which I find inherently obnoxious).

To use your example, someone who thinks that they're sexy is fine, someone who thinks their sexiness alone should afford them something that has nothing to do with sexiness needs to get over themselves.

For instance, assuming sexiness will get you laid is perfectly rational, but (baselessly) assuming it will get you your morning coffee for free is not, and the person needs to get over themselves if they think it should.

Usually when that phrase is said, it's meant to make you aware of your own issues and overcome them to clearly see the topic at hand.
